🇮🇹Day 24

Still a cloudy start to the day, so beach time will have to wait today. Instead we went to visit the cemetery where my father had been laid to rest.

The cemetery is in Scala, which is a small village up in the Latteri mountains. Ravello is to be found opposite and both are definitely worth a visit. Scala for its peace and quiet, Ravello, for it is the centre of music on the coast.

Italian people care tremendously for their deceased family and friends. Cemeteries are immaculately kept as you can see.

When my father died in 1997, his wish was to be buried back home. In Italy a ‘Corone’ is a huge crown of flowers that are given at the funeral. They stand over a meter high.

The tradition here is that after the funeral, so as not to waste the flowers, they are taken from the ‘Corone’ and put on all the tombs of everyone in the cemetery.

At the time I was a little annoyed with this as they were my dad’s flowers and I didn’t want them touched. Obviously grief was playing it’s part. However, now, 25 years on, I think that it’s a lovely thing to do, and appreciated it so much, especially as I am so far away, and can’t put them at his grave myself 🌸
